Torsion – A 1lb Spring-Flipper

Started construction of my 1lb combat robot Torsion. The bot will use torsion springs (thus the name) to power a flipper arm. It uses a snail cam and a tsiny 9v 12rpm motor. The final version won’t have metal this thick/heavy.

So here is a Youtube Video of my prototype of Torsion’s spring-loaded flipper. My victim is a 1lb Lego robot. I’m pretty happy with the results, but the system is wayyyyyyy to heavy.

Not even fully armored, the bot weighs 2oz over the limit. I ended up removing the back wheels and using 1 spring instead of 2. Now the bot lifts inefficiently. Don’t procrastinate, kids.

Currently in Colorado. It’s 2am on the morning of Sparkfun’s AVC event. After spending a night or drilling and cutting away metal, I’m exhausted. This bot isn’t going to win anything. But at least I have something to compete with. Still planning on having an awesome time watching the other bots!
